In support of Movember , Brunei Shell Marketing Company Sendirian Berhad (BSM) in collaboration with Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre (PJSC), held a virtual awareness talk on men’s health yesterday, 18th November 2021. The two guest speakers were Dr Ravi Sekhar Patnaik, Consultant Medical Oncologist of Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre (PJSC) and Dr Jamsari Khalid, Consultant Radiation Oncologist and Head of Radiotherapy Department (PJSC).
The first half of the talk concentrates mainly on the issues of the top 3 cancers for men in Brunei: colorectal, lung, and prostate cancer with testicular cancer being a rare cancer amongst men.
Men in Brunei have a 1 in 27 lifetime risk of getting prostate cancer specifically and prostate cancer accounts to 8.9% of all new male cancers diagnosed in Brunei where most are in the advanced stage.
What are the preventions to reduce the risk of getting these types of cancers?
Dr Ravi explained that men can practice eating a healthy diet, exercise regularly for at least 30 minutes per day and to quit smoking as soon as possible. Dr Jamsari further added that some of the ways that men can do to detect prostate cancer are to seek help with a General Practitioner, talk about their prostate symptoms and get a blood test done such as the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA).
