Child Development Centre

In partnership with the Children at the Child Development Centre, BSM is sponsoring a new programme for children with special needs that will help them progress in their classroom learning. The Occupational Therapy Services for Older Children and Adolescents with Special Needs aims to further improve the four primary domains of child development. Firstly, to develop adaptive skills that targets sensory processing, perceptual motor skills and self-help skills. Secondly, to develop gross motor skills, which involve activities that require balance and coordination such as running, jumping and hopping. Thirdly, to progress fine motor development, which addresses skills that allow special children to develop the ability to do things such as writing and manipulate small objects and lastly, to develop personal social skills that focuses on children's self awareness, self esteem, relationships with others, independence and social responsibility.

This programme is designed for children between the ages of eight and 14, and is conducted in several rooms furnished with furniture, utensil and equipment donated by BSM. Activities range from housekeeping such as baking and cleaning while leisure activities include art and crafts. Supervised by specialists and therapists, the activities are expected to improve sensory integration and processing. BSM staff are also participating in activities organised for the classes.

The Child Development Centre, which is under the Ministry of Health, is a referral centre where children with special needs come to receive early developmental programmes, assisted by various specialists.

The new occupational therapy programme for special children is part of BSM's Outreach Programme, i.e to support the wellbeing and development of the local community and society as a whole. Over the years, BSM has actively been involved in various areas including education, sports and charitable organisations. The sponsorship is also part of BSM's objective in raising public awareness on the activities and issues.
